Over 100 adults help keep the 8th Norwich running and we are always looking for more help. Whether it is once a year at one of our events or every week at our meetings, it all contributes to the success of the group.
As well as our adult volunteers, we operate a Young Leaders programme as an optional part of our Explorers Section. Our Young Leaders receive additional training and gain leadership skills helping run our junior sections. To find out more, go to our Young Leaders page.
With around 300 youth members, over 100 adults, and a wide range of equipment it takes a lot of different people to keep the 8th Norwich running. This includes:
- Our weeknight meetings – adults ranging from section leaders through to administrators (keeping track of badges and attendance);
- Activities – qualified skills instructors to run our water-based (sailing, windsurfing, powerboating, paddle sports, swimming, etc) and land-based activities (walking, climbing, biking, archery, camping, etc);
- Equipment – maintaining and storing our equipment and HQ;
- Administrators – to manage our membership, leadership, finance and IT systems;
- Drivers – minibus drivers and people able to tow our trailers to get members and equipment to events;
- Fundraisers – to help fund the equipment we need to offer such a wide range of activities. From flipping burgers at a Sports Day BBQ to running Social Events for our members, parents and helpers;
- Trustees – responsible for ensuring the correct running of the group.
But the things they all have in common are:
- They are members of the 8th Norwich Team;
- Access to Leader Training – ranging from The Scout Association’s training and Skills Training which has recently included First Aid, Powerboating, Paddleboarding, Archery and Mountain Biking to name but a few;
- Knowing they are helping provide scouting opportunities for young people.
Many of our helpers have children who are members of the 8th Norwich. But don’t worry, you don’t have to stop being a volunteer just because your children have moved on.
